Chapter Seven
Jessa yawned as she stared down at the chicken salad sandwich in front of her.
âSomething wrong?â Brant asked.
She glanced up, slowly blinking. She frowned; feeling like her head was filled with cotton wool.
âSorry?â
âYouâre not eating.â Brantâs gaze was filled with concern.
âOh, not really hungry, I guess.â Theyâd just returned from their shopping trip and while sheâd put her stuff away in her room, Brant had made them both lunch.
Colt was still working in his office.
âYouâre tired.â
Exhausted, more like. But with an effort, she smiled and took a bite. Heâd taken the time to make her lunch; she really should be polite and eat it.
âIâll make dinner tonight,â she offered.
Brant studied her. âWhy?â
Why? Huh, that hadnât been the response sheâd been expecting. âAhh, well, I donât want you to think you have to cook for me and stuff. You must have work to do as well and Iâm just sitting around, twiddling my thumbs.â
âWe should have bought you a new laptop.â
âIâll wait for the insurance payment to come through.â She could easily afford a new one, but what was the point when she didnât know what to write?
Brant frowned. âI would have paid for it. You could have paid me back.â
âOh, thanks for the offer, but I wouldnât be comfortable with that.â She pushed away her plate. Sheâd eaten half the sandwich and it was sitting like a lead ball in the bottom of her stomach. She couldnât eat any more.
âIt would just be a loan until the money came through. At least, then you could start writing again.â
Standing, she took her plate to the sink. âI wish I could start writing at all.â She turned, plastering a smile on her face. âSo what would you like for dinner? Anything you guys are allergic to or you donât like?â
Brant followed her around the kitchen bench to the sink. âYou donât need to cook for us. You donât owe us anything.â
âI just want to be useful.â
âDo you like cooking?â he asked.
Should she be honest? She had told them she would be. âNo, not really.â
âThen no cooking while youâre here.â
Her protest was stalled as he held up his hand. âI happen to enjoy cooking. Itâs my job around here. Colt does the washing up. You can help him with that if you really feel the need.â
âAll right.â She attempted to smile, but it quickly turned into another yawn.
âYou need a nap, baby girl.â
âI donât nap during the day.â
âYou barely had any sleep. Youâll be out like a light.â
He took her hand and pulled her along behind him. Jeez, and she thought Colt was the more dominant one. Brant appeared easy-going and relaxed but perhaps he was just sneakier when it came to getting what he wanted.
âDoesnât a nice, hot bath sound nice? Iâll put in some of those bubbles we bought today, turn on some music and then you can relax.â
Brant had been very involved in her shopping. Sheâd figured heâd just wait outside the shop like all the other men out shopping with their wives and girlfriends.
