Chapter Seven

Jessa yawned as she stared down at the chicken salad sandwich in front of her.

“Something wrong?” Brant asked.

She glanced up, slowly blinking. She frowned; feeling like her head was filled with cotton wool.

“Sorry?”

“You’re not eating.” Brant’s gaze was filled with concern.

“Oh, not really hungry, I guess.” They’d just returned from their shopping trip and while she’d put her stuff away in her room, Brant had made them both lunch.

Colt was still working in his office.

“You’re tired.”

Exhausted, more like. But with an effort, she smiled and took a bite. He’d taken the time to make her lunch; she really should be polite and eat it.

“I’ll make dinner tonight,” she offered.

Brant studied her. “Why?”

Why? Huh, that hadn’t been the response she’d been expecting. “Ahh, well, I don’t want you to think you have to cook for me and stuff. You must have work to do as well and I’m just sitting around, twiddling my thumbs.”

“We should have bought you a new laptop.”

“I’ll wait for the insurance payment to come through.” She could easily afford a new one, but what was the point when she didn’t know what to write?

Brant frowned. “I would have paid for it. You could have paid me back.”

“Oh, thanks for the offer, but I wouldn’t be comfortable with that.” She pushed away her plate. She’d eaten half the sandwich and it was sitting like a lead ball in the bottom of her stomach. She couldn’t eat any more.

“It would just be a loan until the money came through. At least, then you could start writing again.”

Standing, she took her plate to the sink. “I wish I could start writing at all.” She turned, plastering a smile on her face. “So what would you like for dinner? Anything you guys are allergic to or you don’t like?”

Brant followed her around the kitchen bench to the sink. “You don’t need to cook for us. You don’t owe us anything.”

“I just want to be useful.”

“Do you like cooking?” he asked.

Should she be honest? She had told them she would be. “No, not really.”

“Then no cooking while you’re here.”

Her protest was stalled as he held up his hand. “I happen to enjoy cooking. It’s my job around here. Colt does the washing up. You can help him with that if you really feel the need.”

“All right.” She attempted to smile, but it quickly turned into another yawn.

“You need a nap, baby girl.”

“I don’t nap during the day.”

“You barely had any sleep. You’ll be out like a light.”

He took her hand and pulled her along behind him. Jeez, and she thought Colt was the more dominant one. Brant appeared easy-going and relaxed but perhaps he was just sneakier when it came to getting what he wanted.

“Doesn’t a nice, hot bath sound nice? I’ll put in some of those bubbles we bought today, turn on some music and then you can relax.”

Brant had been very involved in her shopping. She’d figured he’d just wait outside the shop like all the other men out shopping with their wives and girlfriends.
